Our Approach

חנך לנער על פי דרכו
"Teach each child according to their way."
(Proverbs 22:6)

Pedagogy

Inspired by noted scholar in the field of Jewish Education Dr. Jonathan Woocher (z”l), Fig Tree's pedagogical approach is rooted in centering the learner, which we strive to do in the following ways:

Meeting students where they are
Our learner-centered pedagogy fosters intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and social growth within a Jewish framework. Lessons integrate Jewish values, ethics, and traditions in a way that is meaningful to our students' daily lives. We meet students where they are, Jewishly, without expectation or judgement. At Fig Tree, there are no prerequisites, at any grade level. Students can join our program any time, from Kindergarten through 7th grade.

Fostering a joyful and engaging learning environment
Our classroom settings are designed to be welcoming, inclusive, and joyful. This includes creating a class community where students feel safe, valued, and excited about learning. Celebrations of Jewish holidays and customs are made vibrant and accessible, fostering a sense of belonging and excitement about Jewish identity.

Building community and strengthening identity
Jewish identity is forged in Jewish community, and - for our students, families, and educators - Fig Tree is Jewish community. Students become friends with their classmates, learning together and celebrating one another's successes and milestones. Outside the classroom, Fig Tree offers families low-stakes opportunities to gather Jewishly for holidays, Shabbats, service projects, and cultural outings.

Curriculum

Fig Tree's custom curriculum incorporates elements of art, music, drama, and movement in every class, in order to foster a meaningful learning experience and deepened sense of Jewish identity for each student.

Why “Fig Tree”?

The fig, or תאנה / te'enah in Hebrew, has important symbolism in Judaism, and is mentioned throughout the Torah. Figs are one of the Seven Species, along with grapes, pomegranates, dates, olives, wheat, and barley.

F.I.G. is also an acronym!

The letters stand for: Foundation, Identity and Growth.

  • Fig Tree provides our students with an enriching and inspiring Jewish foundation;

  • We give ALL kids the space and tools with which to develop their own Jewish identities (however they choose to define them);

  • We nurture and celebrate our students' spiritual, emotional and intellectual growth, throughout the journey.
